The centre which falls under the umbrella of the Kogelberg Biosphere Company, is permitted by CapeNature and accredited by the NSPCA. Unlike a sanctuary, a wildlife rehabilitation center does not keep non-releasable animals in cages. Instead, we focus on practices that allow the patients to return to the wild in a healthy state by providing first aid and veterinary care as needed. Funding for this venture will be derived by providing internationally recognized training in conservation and ethical rehabilitation protocols to future conservationists. HOW IT ALL BEGAN: Our building, located on the R44, halfway between Bettys Bay and Pringle Bay, was a derelict shell when Corlie Hugo, CEO of the Kogelberg Biosphere, first proposed it as the location for a rescue center. Corlie had identified the need for a rescue centre after the fires of 2019 when little could be done for wildlife caught in the flames. The building, affectionally known as baboon house, was in a sad state.
